Abstruse

While Richard Dawkins' polemic confronting faith scores easy points confronting Christian fundamentalisms, he supposes his target to be much vaster: "I am not attacking whatsoever particular version of God or gods. I am attacking God, all gods". Given The God Delusion's lack of extended argument, historical ignorance and unfamiliarity with the literature, the praise it has received from some distinguished scientists is troubling. This essay seeks, first, to examine some of the volume's chief weaknesses — its ignorance of the grammar of "God" and of "conventionalities in God"; the crudeness of its account of how texts are best read; its lack of interest in ethics — and, 2d, to accost the question of what it is about the climate of the times that enables and so ill-informed and badly argued a tirade to exist widely welcomed by many apparently well-educated people. The latter upshot is addressed, starting time, by because the illusion, unique to the English-speaking world, that there is some single set of procedures which uniquely authorize as "scientific" and give privileged access to truth; second, by examining historical shifts in the senses of "organized religion"; thirdly, by locating Dawkins' presuppositions concerning both "science" and "organized religion", his paradoxical belief in progress, and the reception which the book has received, in relation to tensions in our culture signalled, fifty years ago, by C. P. Snowfall.

Journal Data

Founded in 1920 as a focus of Catholic Christian reflection on current events, New Blackfriars publishes manufactures and volume reviews of full general involvement, with an emphasis on theology, philosophy and cultural studies. Theology, for New Blackfriars is ecumenical. The journal welcomes contributions in moral and applied theology, with an emphasis on matters of social justice. As regards philosophy, New Blackfriars is as open up to the Continental hermeneutic tradition as to the analytic approach. While the thought of Thomas Aquinas volition always remain the touchstone of serious intellectual engagement with questions of Christian faith and doctrine, New Blackfriars does not represent whatsoever particular version of Thomism. The periodical welcomes submissions by new authors, trying out their ideas in print for the first time; but is but as happy to consider articles past well established writers.
